AI in Education
An analysis of teachers’ attitudes towards AI in education to inform school policy
ABOUT THE SURVEY
Charlotte plans to conduct a nationwide survey that will explore teachers’ attitudes regarding the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in education. It is aimed to elaborate on a smaller pilot survey conducted in Spring of 2024 in the PVPUSD school district.
The smaller pilot survey demonstrated that teachers are excited to use AI when creating lesson plans and assessments but express worries about it devaluing their profession, degrading teacher-student relationships, and facilitating an overdependence on technology.
Regarding student use of AI, teachers appreciate AI’s potential for personalized student tutoring but are very concerned about misuse, cheating, and its effect on critical thinking skills.
Overall, the pilot survey supports two actions: establishing clear AI usage policies that outline which use cases are allowed/restricted and providing teacher training to educate and support teachers as they reinforce healthy student use of AI.
